In 1939, Franziska Stollwerck gives birth to her son as Europe slips into darkness, slowly realizing that her language, her nationality, and her family name are becoming dangerous. In 1968, sisters Helena and Marta are separated by politics and borders when Soviet tanks enter Czechoslovakia and silence falls between them forever. In 2025, Olga works in the factory gift shop while her family is scattered between Kyiv and Hamburg, her only closeness coming through voice messages sent across a fractured continent. Through these three intertwined stories, Stollwerck becomes a witness to history and a mirror of it. As the outside world fades away, choreographed moments blend seamlessly with lived experiences, revealing how ballroom culture shapes their lives, and how their lives in turn shape the culture. Born in the late 1960s in the United States from the oppression faced by African American and Latinx trans women, ballroom culture has long been a space of self expression, resistance, and liberation for marginalized queer communities. Today it remains vibrant across the world, from New York to Paris and beyond. In Central and Eastern Europe, it has emerged in a different social and political context, yet it continues to honor its original purpose. What may appear to some as purely performative or fashion driven is, for others, a deeply activist practice. Every category of realness, fashion, body, and performance carries the history of struggles faced by queer, trans, and BIPOC communities, many of which remain painfully present today, especially in this region. Into My Life pays tribute to their drive for self-preservation and self-representation, highlighting the memories, identities, and relationships housed within their archive. Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s in the largest affordable housing cooperative in Brooklyn, Cassandra Bromfield’s world was artfully framed by her mother’s Super-8 camera. A schoolteacher with many creative talents, Cassandra’s mom documented the exuberance of her neighbourhood’s public spaces, showcasing the lively pool, the packed playground, and the graffitied handball court. Children and teenagers gleefully performed in front of her Bolex. Passion to create was passed from mother to daughter, as was the lease on the affordable apartment. Cassandra still lives in the same place, working as a fashion designer during the day, sewing her clients’ visions, and as a filmmaker at night, assembling documents of her own life and environment with footage shot by her mother. &nbsp;When Cassandra posts her edits online, she notes the lack of comparable footage from the time of other black families, much less footage shot by black women. She believes that her mother’s intent behind the camera was to show that the lives of the people around her, people who might otherwise be forgotten, mattered. Ninety-one-year-old Mamka fills her days with magazines, folk songs, and the few stories she still remembers from her youth. Her daughter Vlastička has made her home a place of care, looking after both her aging mother and her youngest granddaughter, Natálka. Through intimate moments and gentle observation, the film celebrates the beauty, vulnerability, and resilience of these women, and the deep bonds that hold them together.
